a woods squirrel
came to sit
by my fire
last night
i explained to
her
that squirrels don’t
do such things
she giggled, and
if i told you
the rest of this story
youd giggle too

pilgrim
of the morning frost
come in
i heard you singing
down by the birch trees
along youngs creek where
wood ducks bob
greeting
the ghost in each love
you passed.
dont be embarrassed-
that your joy ought so
resound is my joy
and my hope.

It’s hard to send silent smiles through these words,
like pomegranates- kissing the naked eyes.
It’s hard to draw near from so far, looking outward…
like the dark side of the moon gazing at the sunlit earth.
Not many can see in the dark here,
and those that can carry lamps anyway.
Not many can see in the dark,
and losing each other is a dangerous business.

its not the way
the sparrow
huddles
against the cold
nor the way
the cloud hangs
and slowly
dries up
its the sky
that surrounds
and enters
herself
which chills
and warms
us.
