the mad Grocer

Posted on Dec 1st, 2008 by davie : laughter davie
6/4/8

i want to be like the mad Grocer
of applegate.
He stocks his shelves with
what we need:
shoes, linens,
bread and wine.

He trades Joe's jersey milk for
Mrs. Taylor's cut flowers.
He hires the gang kids to
graffiti the store walls with curling
words of every colour:
"fluid,"
"foundation,"
"service."
People stop and stare.

i want to tell you about the Grocer-
how he hands me a pair of socks just as
i remember the cold night before.

i want to be like Him-
cleaning my pantry of personal things,
knowing the needs of others,
living in the spaces between loved ones.

i went to the mad Grocer of Applegate:
"i have just the thing for you,
son."
he said,
and so in saying,
he gave it to me.

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for December 11, 2008:

dunno what the night frost might
feel
clinging to grass while
waiting
for morning.

and can't fathom a
way to ask.

but i would like to know.

What is the most difficult thing about love?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for December 12, 2008:

"seeds"

where blackberry thorns and star
thistle grew,
we watered.
wild flowers sprouted,
green and boisterous,
driving back
the weeds.

growing

Posted on Dec 22nd, 2008 by davie : laughter davie
we're growing towards
our graves

like trees put
down roots

like sparrows take
flight

every crack of blind dampness
and every shaft of sunlight

What lifts your spirits?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for December 28, 2008:

"renovate an economy,
invest in chattering squirrels, chantrelle
mushrooms and spruce saplings!"

someone somewhere jumps
through a window in desperation
and a robin sings.
"hello,
hello!

renovate an economy,
invest in the real."

What motivates?

Posted on Dec 29th, 2008 by davie : laughter davie
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for December 29, 2008:

broken window pane and
dark, dark, dark
sea.

albatross,
tell me how you float so
sweetly there,

beyond this
jagged
glass.
